Shell Houston Open News
World No. 1 (and fellow Texan) Jordan Spieth, No. 5 Rickie Fowler, No. 12 Branden Grace of South Africa and No. 20 Brooks Koepka are among the latest player commitments for next week’s Shell Houston Open.
Spieth announced at a Singapore Open news conference weeks ago that the Shell Houston Open was on his schedule. He officially put his name on the commitment list on Tuesday. Tournament Director Steve Timms also announced that four-time major championship winner Ernie Els, longtime fan favorite Steve Stricker and Korean standout K. J. Choi will be on hand the week of March 28-April 3 at the Golf Club of Houston as Shell Oil Company celebrates its 25th year as title sponsor.
Spieth will be making his fourth consecutive SHO appearance. He was in a three-way playoff last year with Amarillo native Johnson Wagner and eventual champion J. B. Holmes. The very next week Spieth won his first major at the Masters. The 22-year-old Dallas native triumphed at U.S. Open in June to claim his second major.
The addition of Spieth and Els boosts the total to 13 major championship winners in the field, including Phil Mickelson. That group has cumulatively won 24 majors, including six Masters, eight U.S. Opens, seven British Opens and three PGA Championships.
Some of the other all-star talent in attendance will be Sergio Garcia of Spain, Louis Oosthuizen of South Africa and Henrik Stenson of Sweden.
Slotted the week prior to the Masters on the PGA TOUR schedule, the Shell Houston Open is the last opportunity for players not otherwise eligible to gain an invitation to Augusta National. Players have until Friday at 4 p.m. (CDT) to commit. They may also withdraw on or before that date with no penalty.
To date, a total of 46 players representing 18 countries are in the world class field of the 10th oldest tournament on the PGA TOUR.
The entire list of competitors will be released Friday, 3/25/16.
